Online Poker

Steven Bednarek

In summer of 2003, Chris Moneymaker then a twenty seven year old accountant stunned the poker world by winning the $2.5 jackpot of World Series of Poker finale. The reason his win was stunning was because Chris was an unknown at that time and had only acquired a seat to the $10,000 entry tournament through a $40 buy-in online. Online poker has since then seen a huge surge of participation.

Online poker is like the namesake poker played online either with real money or with "play" money. The games rules are the same as those played offline, with similar betting structures. In order to participate one needs to create an online account with the website hosting the game. Sometimes some software may also have to be downloaded to enable certain features. But overall online games are very user friendly and the features can be grasped intuitively by players. It is common for novice players to start playing online poker with play money and then progress to betting actual money.

There are certain features unique to the online playing environment. These include "advance action" checkboxes that enable players to check their moves in advance. So the computer automatically calls/ folds / or raises to preset limits when these boxes are checked. Other features also include the chat feature which enables the players to interact with each other. The online sites also provide statistics on a player, which enable them to analyze their playing decisions.

The online sites usually have a player "lobby" of sorts which enable the players to view the tables being played and decide to join the tables or waitlist for them. The lobby provides information per table played such as the average pot size, percentage of players who see flops, average number of hands being played per hour. This information is considered useful as it enables players to discern the quality of the game being played on the table before joining it.

If and when a player does decide to play with real money, they use companies like Neteller to transfer money into online accounts. This involves creating an account with Neteller, or any such similar service provider who then link this account with the player's bank. So the money is transferred from the bank to this third party provider who then pays the gambling site for the bets placed.

There are many online poker sites and out of these one of the biggest is LittlewoodsPoker.com. All these websites have their own signature events, stars and prizes. Most of them also offer poker cruises as rewards or also seats into high entry fee poker events as rewards. Needless to say with the growing popularity of the Internet games and the fascination with the big rewards offered online poker is here to stay.
