Online Poker - Risks, Rewards and Strategy

Steven Bednarek

Online poker has its own unique set of risks and rewards. Certain strategies are also unique to the online environment because the "read" into a player's playing behavior has to be made in a virtual environment. Online poker has several advantages over offline games. The first and foremost of this is the convenience of playing online. Online poker is accessible at all times thus suits everyone's schedule.

Most of the online games are played on small tables of six people, poker players find this as an advantage as only online they can get a guaranteed table of at least six players. Offline games are subject to the schedules of the people playing. Online games are also very fast, and the advantage of the virtual environment is that a single player can play multiple tables. This is of course physically impossible in the offline environment. The other advantages of the online environment include the accuracy of the game. Since everything is electronic there are no missed cues, illegal raises and other human errors that plague the real game. Cost of playing online is very minimal, and if playing with fake electronic money there is often no cost attached. Online games also allow for game selection. Players can view all the statistics of the tables and the games before choosing to play the game.

Even though the online poker has several advantages there are also several risks associated with playing online. Identity theft, cyber bullying, hacking are some of the concerns associated with online playing. There is also concern over player collusion, wherein players can collude and thus rob legitimate players of their wins. The legality of online games also varies with the rules of individual countries and states.

One of the biggest concern of online players is the absence of body language. Reading an opponent's body language has long been a favorite ace for offline players in the decisions made to call or raise. Online games though they lack in this feature have other "tells" such as chat features decision taking time etc.

In the online environment people take the timing of the bet made, the time taken to make a decision, the quality of chat whether it is angry, absent or unprovoked, the use of action boxes all these combined to make a read on whether the opponent has a strong or a weak hand.

Online poker allows players to practice their game with a variety of opponents and playing styles at their own convenience. This is the reason for the growing popularity of online poker.
